Can I ignore it?

You could ignore the problem and suffer the intermittent locking, potentially not being able to use the windows and doors and such like but it is so easy, fast and cheap to repair that it doesn’t make any sense to put up with it.

And the BMW GM5 not only controls the locking mechanism but the windscreen wipers, alarms and interior lights so you could find yourself with many more problems.
